Drinks: Purple gang- blackberry infused buffalo trace, contreiu. not what I expected as it didn't have a strong bourbon taste but it was pretty refreshing and not overly sweet. I wouldn't get it if you want a typical bourbon drink, but I would if you want to try something new. Liberator collins- light and delicious, would be a safe go to drink that would appeal to the masses. Angry ginger- super spicy, like jalapeno spicy drink as I think the tequila was jalapeno tequila....can't really remember. I liked it but my girlfriends could barely drink it. If you want to try something on the edge this is it. Food: Chicken taco Mahi mahi taco- really good; It had a layer of cheese between two corn tortillas. The mahi mahi was more well done than i would expect it resulting in me forgetting that i had fish versus chicken, but it didnt change the fact that it was still good. Cheese and pepperoni pizza- This was excellent. It was not a heavily oiled or doughy pizza. It is a great happy hour snack...great thing is that you can get this by the slice. Chips, salsa and queso-nothing special but good. I wouldn't get this next time as I would want to try something else. Atmosphere: Is gorgeous. It reminded me of a Downtown Detroit or Chicago bar. It really is not something you would expect in Downtown Royal Oak, but that is why I can't wait to go back. It is a cool place to go grab a drink and a bite to eat. Service: I guess the staff was short so it took a bit of time to get to us, but the bartender did an amazing job hustling around making sure she can get to people as quick as possible. She was especially great once another waitress came in...poor girl had to deal with 5 girls asking tons of questions about the menu. Overall, I recommend this place!

Eating out is 50% service and 50% food. Our service lacked, while the food made up for it. BE PREPARED to wait a long time if you come during peak hours. We waited close to 2 hours for a table for 3. There is not much waiting space. Once we did get our table, we ordered our appetizers immediately. Our server had not come back to take our main course order. I had to ask the hostess to find our server so we could order. She was also not attentive when our food came. Food though was very good. They have a mix of Mexican, pizza, and burgers. Cool and fun place. Loved the food and ambiance. The tacos were delicious and cheap! I got the mahi mahi taco and it had a citrusy taste to it which made it delicious. The esquites (Mexican corn salad) with chicken was very good. I added it to the inside of my taco which made it so much better. It was like a salsa. Order it with extra chips because they don't give you very much chips. Not a big restaurant so I wouldn't go here with a big group of people. The manager and waiters were exceptionally nice and friendly. This isn't my favorite Mexican restaurant (imperial is always #1 on my list) and the menu doesn't have much to offer but I would definitely come back. It's a fun place to hang out and the windows open to the outside (like its neighbor restaurant ronin) which makes it fun and enjoyable.

Why is there a picture of Evel Knievel in the dining room? He is neither iron nor a horse, and frankly, his presence upsets me, as I'm old enough to remember his ill-fated stunt in the summer of '73 when he strapped C4 to his chest and attempted to clear a school bus filled with some of the cutest puppies the world has ever known. The smell of burnt flesh and soft whimpering shall haunt me for the remainder of my days. "Dead puppies and craft cocktails don't mix." That was the consensus at our table, which quickly changed when our nachos arrived. The nachos are so good it will temporarily make you forget about all those dead puppies and the lunatic whose overpowering ego and quest for immortality led to The Day the Cuteness Died. Our next order consisted of a few sandwiches, a burrito, and several tacos. All of the tacos were amazing, and quite filling, especially if you're eating with a heavy heart. I ordered three, and ate 1.5. I took the taco remnants home and found they were equally good microwaved the following day -- although with each bite my mind transitioned back to how the dogs, along with the shell of the school bus, were buried in a mass grave in Scottsdale, Arizona. There was just much dirt piled up in that arid landscape, unlike our tres leches cake, which was incredibly moist. We ordered this delicious dessert for our friend John, since we totally forgot his birthday. John loves cake. And horses. And puppies that are alive and not burnt to a crisp. At least this place delivered on one of those things.

I visited Iron Horse for the first time because of the ratings I saw on Yelp. It was an easy walk from my visit to the Brownie Gourmet down 4th, and the staff was pretty cool. It's a trendy sort of crowd and relatively new. I sat at the bar and let another kind patron help me place my order. I ordered Steak Tacos, Fish Tacos (as recommended), Steak Nachos and a salad with Chicken Salsa. The dinner came out to be $60 with each taco at $4 a piece. This is pretty steep for a taco, but i decided to see what the hype was about. While I was disappointed, my picky husband seemed to like them, so not a total loss. I can't say I loved anything, but I didn't hate anything either. I removed a star from the rating because I saw a bunch of gnats or flies circling over the middle table where a group was celebrating with several rounds of drinks. This was directly beneath the chandelier, and the front of the tiny establishment was wide open with a fully retractable window, so this may be the reason. Either way, it was a cool little place and I can see it being pretty popular as more people learn it is open.

The margarita was amazing and everything I wanted, craved, needed after my escape from the home ( there is a teething 10 month old there waiting for my return). The Esquitos were wonderful. Sweet spicy full of flavor, unique since I have never experienced this item on any menu before.... I really was not sure what to expect. Expect delicious! This was my second visit both visits were exceptional.

After reading reviews on Yelp, I was excited to feed into my taco addictions. But maybe I had too high expectations because it wasn't as great as I thought it would be. We went at 5:30pm on a Tuesday and got a table, no problem. The waitress was nice and the service was good. I ordered three tacos: tofu, chicken, and steak. I liked the tofu and chicken, but the steak was overcooked and so chewy to a point that it was like jerky. What I didn't like were the shells. I am used to having soft corn shells, but they were so fried. After eating the tacos, I felt so gross like I just drank a cup of grease. I guess it's my personal preference. Was the food bad? No, it is average. Would it be worth coming back for tacos? I think not. I would stick to my go to taco place (Tienda) in Madison Heights or Imperial.

Met a girlfriend here for dinner this past Wednesday night, Aug 26. It is hard to see from the street, but it is right next to Ronin & the theatre off 4th street. I arrived about 10 min after my friend, and when I got to the table it took another 10 min for us to be waited on. Besides that, food was delicious! We started with the nachos, and all I can say is OMG... It was huge!! (That's what she said). We decided to order them without meat for $11, but you can add a variety of meats for an additional $4 if you'd like. Great flavor, but wow! Had we known they were that large, we agreed we would have split that as our meal. My friend ordered the tamales and really enjoyed them. I got a chicken taco $3, with a side of rice & beans for an additional $3. Wish I could tell you how that was, but I was so full from the nachos I didn't even touch it. Hopefully it tastes good reheated! ;) Would definitely like to go back and try some other things on their menu. Great addition to Royal Oak!

I went with a group of friends to check this place out and I wasn't disappointed. I love tequila and so this place was perfect for me. I ordered a margarita and it was one of the best I've had. They have a lot of unique drinks on their menu but I'm not that adventurous. My boyfriend tried the Pink Panther and Honey Badger and said he really liked it. We got the full rack of ribs and it was incredible. It falls off the bone as advertised. I felt like the desserts were a little disappointing. I was expecting more from the strawberry nachos. The tres leches cake was pretty good but nothing I would crave. My only criticism is that our waitress really didn't want to split up the check in three. I know it can be difficult to split the bill in a semi large party, but I think there's a better way to handle it than just say you can't especially since this is an up and coming place in a young area. They could have asked if we wanted the bill split or offer some ways to do it. It's not a big deal but it's just a little something that rubbed me he wrong way. TL;DR: This place is a cool, fun place to check out. Definitely get the ribs but find dessert somewhere else.

I was really craving tacos and my friend Rachel recommended Iron Horse, and I'm so glad that she did. The service was a bit wonky at first, but it greatly improved toward the end of the night. We had guacamole and salsa to start, and then she ordered some meat-based tacos, whereas I had the tofu and mahi mahi tacos. I think if I were doing this all over again I would have ordered only two tacos, not three. They're much more substantial than a typical street taco, and they are very oily. The mahi mahi were outstanding - so were the tofu, but the mahi mahi was my absolute favorite. The fish was cooked perfectly. I was impressed with the fact that they forgot my tofu taco, and when I let them know, they brought me two, and didn't charge me for either of them. I feel like they were so accountable, which makes me much more inclined to come back - and also, the mahi mahi tacos were so good that I couldn't not come back.

Went here for the first time today. I have heard good things about this place. The drink menu was sad. The food menu was all over the place. They have tacos, which I thought that was it but also ribs, pizza, and some other misc things thrown in. The food was subpar at best. We decided to stay with the "mexican" items on the menu. My bf got the smothered burrito with tofu and it had no taste. I got the nachos and there was nothing great about them. Their hot sauces were actually very sweet with no heat at all. Overall save your time to go to Imperial in Ferndale.

The only reason I didn't give this place 5 stars is because the menu is a bit limited and the drinks on the expensive side (at least compared to the other items). Everything else however was fantastic. The tacos are served in two corn tortillas held together with melted cheese! All of the dishes I saw had generous portions of meat or fish and were served with a variety of interesting salsas and dressings. A few weeks ago I had a strawberry nachos dessert which was delicious (great to share with a group) but unfortunately I noticed yesterday it was gone. One of the comments on here stated that they do not have a restroom but that is not true- it's a bit hidden but it's back there! I hope they keep adding menu items- excited to go back again!

A friend of mine and I had a great dinner there last week. We had the queso for an app and split the ribs. The queso was fantastic, had a good kick of spice without sacrificing flavor! The ribs we awesome we both thought they were cooked just right and had enough sauce. The coleslaw was good as well... The real star of the show was the purple gang drink. It is amazing. Go there to try that at least if nothing else! We will definitely be back!

Great addition to downtown Royal Oak with fantastic tacos, pizza, cocktails and brunch. We've had a variety of tacos, burritos, biscuits and chorizo gravy, and huevos rancheros and all have been excellent. I am a big fan of their blackberry infused bourbon. It is next to ROMT, so parking and wait time can be a challenge if there is a big show. My only negative experience was a wait time on a Saturday evening because it is a small space. We showed up at 8 pm with party of 4, wait was estimated at 30-45 minutes. At 9pm, I walked through the restaurant area on way to restroom and saw two empty four-person tables. We were finally seated at one of those tables at 9:15p. Not happy they kept us waiting for so long when there were empty tables. By the time we got our food at 10pm, they had turned down the lights and turned up the music. We weren't planning on having dinner at 10pm, but everyone was happy with service and food once we were seated. We've had three other wonderful experiences so going to chalk it up to bad timing during prime time on a Saturday.

I went there twice in one week during my visit to Detroit. The bar must be really good but I wouldn't know because I don't drink. Friends brought me there for the food and i was impressed. Order the Esquites for appetizer. It's a mound of delicious sweet corn freshly sliced from the cob amid some salsa, dressings that's amazing. Served with (not enough) Nachos. Tacos are also delicious. We ordered steak, mahi-mahi and Carnitas and found all of them as good as the best we had in Southern California where Mexican food is probably even better than in Mexico. Anyway, there is little or no wait if you go around dinner time. The crowd arrives later and then it's packed! Service is very friendly and knowledgeable. I recommend it highly.

What a great place. I really enjoy Iron Horse. The staff is very friendly. The only thing that drops it down for me is the bar service is extremely slow...unless you are the only one there. I have been there 6x in the last 6 weeks. Yep, I must have a problem. I have tried much of the menu and what I've had has been very good. Nachos and Pizza are excellent, but if you order nachos, bring a couple of friends. HUGE. For some reason, their house Bloody Mary's name escapes me, but do yourself a favor. ORDER IT. After reading the pdf menu I decided to give this place a shot. My girlfriend and I were pleasantly surprised with what we found. Being suckers for mexican cuisine I had the tacos and my girlfriend had the wet burrito, both were amazing. The carnitas and mahi mahi tacos were absolutely exceptional. Also, if you're there ask for the ex-girlfriend house made hot sauce. The ambiance was comfortable and they played all of my girlfriend's favorite music (band of horses, radiohead, etc). The draft pints were a bit pricey but I hear they have a happy hour from 3-6. I'll be coming back to Iron Horse, for sure.

Came in for some food and a couple beers.. Not sure why they charge $6.50 for a pint of modelo, but I didn't realize it until the bill came. $13 for 2 pints of beer and another $15 for chorizo nachos that were not much more than queso dip with beans and meat. Very underwhelming and after tip spending $34 seems a little absurd. Hope somebody sees this (owner/manager) and has a reply for the overpriced drinks/food.. PERFECTION!!!!!!! It's a small bar with excellent cocktails and killer food. Not greasy bar food either. Quality stuff made from scratch! Food that won't weigh you down and put you in food coma for the rest of the night. I had the Espiritas(sp?) appetizer. Fresh sweet corn with house made tortilla chips, cilantro, queso fresco, carnitas (pulled pork) and other awesome ingredients I can't remember after a night of drinking. My companion had the chorizo tacos and they were excellent. For dessert we had strawberry nachos and they were perfect. House made tortilla chips rolled in cinnamon and sugar covered with sliced fresh strawberries, honey, chocolate, and marshmallow! Yes it's loud in here but I'm loud dammit so I like it! It's lively like a good small club in New York City. If you're looking for romantic and quiet then go to the library. Bottom line.....If you want to have a kick ass time with fun energetic people and great food and drinks then it's Iron Horse for the win!

Who said one has to go down to Mexican Town to have a proper Taco. This place oozes hipster with a nice big frame of Evil Knieval and the best looking Chandler I have ever seen. Craving tacos, I did a search for something new. First let me say, if I had realized it was Tuesday, I would have taken a pic for Taco Tuesday. Oh well... Here is the small restaurant on 4th next to Royal Oak Music Theater. They were smart with their signage, making it easy to find. Ale Mary's should take note. You walk in to be greeted by two young ladies. The ambience is dark and intimate, the music is a little loud, otherwise it's quite cozy. The menu. Not a ton of options, which is good. Makes decision making easier. Oh, they have a nice drink menu, but I decided to skip the alcohol tonight. Back to the food. I ordered a chicken and a carnitas taco. My husband ordered a mahi mahi and tofu taco. The tacos were $3-$4 each, which I didn't think was too bad. We also added on beans and rice for $3 and chips and salsa for $5. The chips and salsa came with a delicious red salsa and a tangy tomatillo one, which I was not a fan of. Rice and beans were good. Now, I did not try the tofu tacos, however, my husband said they were really good and the texture of the tofu was good. My tacos were good. I loved the shills were slightly fried, giving them a moist and chewy, yet crispy texture. As far as the meat inside of them, I couldn't tell the difference between the chicken and carnitas. Not much flavor on either end. However, still good because of the flavors from the salsa, lime, onions, shells, etc. Service. I mentioned two ladies as hostesses. I feel like they should have maybe had one hostess and replace the other with another server. There were only two servers. This place isn't huge, but I think if they had an extra server, it would have been better. The two that were there didn't even have time to give to their customers because they were so busy. Keep in mind, though it was a tad slow, the service was still good. That's it. Take what you'd like from this review. It was good, but not the best ever, hence the 4 stars. I'll go back though!

Excellent food and service. Great menu and great layout/space. Very inviting and an awesome adaptive re-use of the building. Exactly what Royal Oak needs -a place that can hang with what's going on downtown/midtown and in Ferndale. Only reason not a 5 star is for the craft cocktails they are making, the ice they use isn't good enough. The small ice machine chips water down their cocktails that are served over ice, but the strained ones were terrific. Pours are a little light. Could do another half ounce or so for the prices charged. Had the Esquites with chorizo and chicken salsa - just order it - amazing.

The only thing stopping me from giving this place 5 stars is the tacos lacked filling. I had the mahi mahi fish taco - I ordered two of them but had to pile all the ingredients into one to make it filling. It's cheap enough at $4 a taco so not a big deal. Also they have excellent margaritas. No sour mix. Fresh ingredients. This place probably deserves a 4.5 stars!

Rarely am I this compelled to write a review right after visiting a restaurant. My girlfriend came in on a Thursday night without hearing a lot about this spot and we were blown away. We had the esquites as an appetizer and shared 5 tacos for the main course. The tacos are the best we've had in the area, significantly better than the taco place in Ferndale. My favorites were the carnitas and chorizo. I really also enjoyed the ambiance. The music was modern - Spoon, Thom Yorke, Shins. The service was top notch: our waiter was attentive and gave perfect recommendations - especially the berry infused bourbon drink. At the end of our meal we had the pleasure or meeting one of the owners who checked up on us. This is immediately going in our rotation (hopefully it doesn't get too popular so we can get in easy).

How is this place getting so many good reviews? The service wasn't very good, but I'll give them some slack because I get it - they get busy. The food however, was greasy and cold. I had to stop eating the tacos because it felt like I was eating grease. The guac was mediocre at best. I think I tried one of their cocktails but ended up switching to whiskey on the rocks. If you trust a place that serves tacos and pizza, go for it. In the future, I will not. Over and out.

I didn't know what to expect when this place opened. It has a wide variety of styles of food within a small menu, from tacos to pizza, which made me question it at first. But after trying a good portion of the menu from several visits, I concede that I'm a fan. The staff is friendly, the interior is sexy and cool. Based on all the good reviews, I REALLY really wanted to like this place. Sadly, I just...didn't. My fiance and I stopped in here last night for dinner around 730. The place looked pretty packed and it's also pretty small in comparison to other restaurants. We were seated after about a 10 minute wait - not bad. Our table was quite possibly THE WORST table in the entire restaurant. There's the front section of the restaurant that offers a bit more space with big open windows, but we were seated in the back where they had horrible "wrap around" bench seating that makes it feel like you're eating with 15 other people. We were right smack in the middle of two groups with about 8 inches of space in between each table. Every time a person would leave from their seat, I had to hold our plates to make sure they didn't accidentally get knocked on the ground by someone's backside. The waiter barely had room to turn around between tables, that's how tight it was... Our service was below average. Our waiter spoke extremely fast and was only there long enough to take our orders and bring out the check. I don't even remember what he looked like he was moving so fast! This could have been be due to the high volume of people, but my position still stands. We placed orders for the cheese bread appetizer, steak nachos, two chicken tacos and two steak tacos. After about 15 minutes of waiting with no appetizer, I could feel the hangriness setting in. I figured our app should be arriving any minute, and before the inner Monster could show itself, a runner was placing the cheese bread down in front of us. The bread itself was pretty good. It was basically a sauceless pizza, size wise. The marinara dipping sauce was gross and tasted like tomato soup. Ranch dressing was good. After we started eating the bread, my next thought was "I really hope our food doesn't come out right after this, I really hate that" .... No sooner than I thought it, it had become a reality. Now, the food runner/Tetris Master was arranging plates, serving dishes, glasses, and pizza trays in front of us trying to figure out the best set up for all this food sitting on top of the World's Tiniest Table. Seriously, I have to wonder if anyone even measured or if they just said f*** it this is good enough...tight squeeze to say the least. Steak tacos were good, the steak on it's own was weak. Same goes for the chicken. Tacos became better with the addition of the "Ex Girlfriend" habanero salsa. Salsa verde was basically all lime. Nachos were piled high with all the "stuff" - cheese, queso fresco, lettuce, refried beans, etc etc. In retrospect I would've liked to have tried a different meat on the nachos, just to see what else they could do but I was happy with the steak. All in all, the restaurant was a little loud, tiny, not enough room between tables, not the greatest service I've encountered, but the food was enough for an additional star. Will I try again? Sure. Will it be soon? I wouldn't hold my breath.

I have run out of superlatives to describe this place. It is soooo good that I'm willing to suffer the draconian perking in Royal Oak. I had steak tacos and a couple margs. They were both perfect. I will be back. The bartender, whose name I can't spell, was charming and friendly and mixed a tremendous margarita. Ambient music was cool and best of all: NO TELEVISIONS. As for you, don't go there. That would only lessen the chances of me finding a spot at the bar. It's okay if you sit at the tables.

Showed up on a Saturday night with 4 others, was told we would have a 45 minute wait, it's a pretty small place, so that wasn't surprising. The first thing we noticed was how loud it was in there and that we had to yell to converse. We commented that it would probably be better after we were seated because the seating area would surely be quieter. We were happy to be seated in about 25 minutes in the back far corner of the restaurant. After a visit by our waiter with menus & water, we settled on our orders. Two in our party ordered the tamales, only to have the waiter come back out about 5 minutes later to report that he'd forgotten to tell us they were out of those. They picked tacos instead, it's a fairly small menu, so not a lot of other options. Soon the manager came over to apologize also, so nice touch there, too bad they didn't tell us before ordering. The food was good, as were the drinks, everyone was pleased with their meal and our waiter was a nice young guy who was really friendly and trying hard to keep us happy. The food was a reasonable price point, the drinks are pricey, so 1 was my limit ($11 for a bourbon drink). The real problem that would keep me from coming back was the volume of the music and the overall noise level. The clientele was mixed with lots of late 20's & 30's but also quite a lot in the 50+ category like my friends and I. We had to yell to talk and It seemed the music kept getting louder. We finally asked the waiter to please adjust the volume, and the young man and his date next to us seconded our request. Nothing changed and it seemed the music got louder. Finally we asked the manager and they did turn it down, but it was still pretty loud. I didn't even mind the music choices, they were playing a lot of my favorites - I just wanted to be able to talk. It's a restaurant, not a dance club, I don't understand why they feel the need to blast the music to the point of making you yell. It really did diminish our experience because we had wanted to chat and it made casual conversation with the person across or at the end of the table a challenge. So - food good, prices good, good (slightly slow) service, cute place, fix the noise level and acoustics.

My girlfriend and I enjoyed our evening at Iron Horse. Both fans of bourbon, we ordered primarily bourbon and/or whiskey cocktails which were nicely balanced. Combined we tried the Kentucky Mule, Evel Fashioned...well, basically all the bourbon cocktails which we highly suggest. For dinner, I tried the Steak Sandwich which came with baked potato chips and a pickle. The sandwich's textures were evenly dispersed and quite satisfying. My girlfriend ordered the IHRO Salad with tofu. As a vegan, she felt this was a tasty and filling salad. We'll be revisiting Iron Horse soon...perhaps for the tacos!

Stopped in for lunch. Very small, maybe 50 seats and no TV (but loud funky music like you are in Ferndale). Menu was abbreviated, as well as the drafts. We had the tacos and pizza, very favorable yet overpriced. Has great potential (good service) but one issue is the restrooms- go out, turn right and then two lefts and they are shared with two other establishments in the building, most not ideal. RO had great offerings so to make it, they need to step up their game and make this experience better. Staff was rock solid.

The drinks here are awesome and the food is not bad either. We had a little bit of a tough time getting the bartender's attention cause it was really busy (can't blame them a lot - its Royal Oak and its always busy during the peak hours). Overall it was a good experience. I would suggest trying it out during a week night so its not as crowded.

I'm so happy to see a place like this in Royal Oak to counteract the BWW, corporate eatery wave that's making Royal Oak less competitive with restaurants in Ferndale and Detroit. Great atmosphere, outstanding cocktails, and tasty food. The tacos are larger that the ones served at The Imperial, and more generously filled. They are very good (I had the tofu, mahi mahi, and chicken), but not quite as creatively designed as the ones in Ferndale. We also split the esquites as an appetizer and it was an interesting combination of textures and flavors. For me, it was the walk in the zero degree night just for the music! Hearing Franz Ferdinand, The Smiths, and The Cure made my drinks and meal that much more enjoyable. Looking forward to this being a regular go-to place for my husband and friends and me in our hometown. The one thing I couldn't quite figure out was the presence of pizza on a southwestern/Mexican street food-vibed menu. We didn't try it, so maybe it's worth being there, but it made the menu seem like it had a bit of an identity crisis. I was thinking that maybe this was the old Tania's Pizza and maybe they wanted to put an inherited pizza oven to good use.

This place rocks my world. Best tacos in town by far. Only place that I have truly enjoyed corn tortillas over flour tortillas because they toss a little cheese in between the two tacos to keep them from falling apart. The tofu taco is amazing(don't forget the slaw), the steak taco is always great, and the new buffalo shrimp taco is awesome. The esquites is one of the better appetizers in town. Even their burger is awesome. Don't even get me started on brunch. From the fig yogurt to the fat Elvis, I can't get enough of Ironhorse's brunch. Their pizza and breadsticks are amazing! I live in Lansing and visited here before going to the Royal Oak theatre. So it's a good 1.5 hour drive from me but I'm planning to make a trip back here just to have their pizza again. Definitely would recommend, especially if you're going because you're seeing a show at the theatre because it's right next to it.

Stopped in to check this place out and count me as a fan. The staff is fantastic. Very outgoing, witty, and fun. The food is amazing. I tried a few different items, cheese bread, pizza slice, Mahi mahi tacos, Chorizo tocos and I wouldn't be able to choose just one the next time I go back. The drink menu is eclectic and fresh. If youre looking to dry something different, I highly suggest this place. The only reason it doesn't get a 5th star is it is just too small. You will almost always be waiting during peak hours.

This is hands down my new favorite spot in Royal Oak!! The atmosphere is perfect (although the music was a little on the loud side) and the drinks/food are amazing. The only major downfall to this place is its size and consequently, it's ability to seat a group of 4+ in a timely manner. The 2 times I have been with a group of 4, we waited between 1.5-2 hours to be seated. So if you find yourself waiting (which you will), grab a spot in the bar area and try one of their many fantastic drinks! I've had both the Liberator Collins and the Kentucky Mule, both perfect. As for dinner, I've been a handful of times now and I can't NOT get the tacos! So so good, especially the mahi mahi. Even though I haven't tried anything else, everything they brought out of the kitchen looked great. If you're looking for a cool, casual place to enjoy some fantastic food and drinks, this is your place!!

Iron horse is a great new addition to Royal Oak. Located next to Royal Oak Music theater, the Iron Horse is small, but not cramped by any means. The aesthetic was awesome with mood lighting and trendy with a touch of vintage decor. The cocktail list is impressive, as the drinks are tasty and strong. I was apprehensive about the menu as it is lighter fare, but was very impressed with the appetizer(corn,avocado,Mexican type dish- drawing blank on the name) and tacos (mahi mahi and chicken) . Definitely a cool little spot to check out.

The food was absolutely phenomenal. The queso dip was the best I've ever had, it was almost a combination of queso and beer cheese soup. We had the wet burritos which were outstanding as well (best mexican in the area). The dessert nachoes and cake were both very good (can't go wrong with strawberries and chocolate). It's a new establishment so the service was quite slow but the manager/owner was great and made sure we had a good experience. All the drinks we had were good too. Overall I was impressed by the place. It's small and the dark sign makes it difficult to find.....we sat right by the window and watched no less than 5 or 6 different people try to get in using the wrong door. The food and service were great. We tried the nacho's and tacos. I would compare the tacos to imperial in Ferndale except they are bigger and in my opinion, taste better. It wasn't real busy for a Saturday night but hopefully word gets out and this place can make it.

Our second visit to this busy and lively, albeit, small, restaurant/bar was exceptional. Found a number of friends having drinks when we walked in so the 25 minute wait went by quickly. Chris is diligent with his cocktails behind the bar, taking care that no one waits too long for a beverage. Food is very good, my wet burrito could have been a tad warmer but was delicious, the salsas are terrific, and Laura was wonderful as our server. She had a big crowd to handle but always had a smile and found a minute for conversation. Big kudos to Tony as he seems to orchestrate how everything runs and it runs really well. Not an easy job in the confines of The Iron Horse. My favorite part is, of course, the music. What a great selection of tunes and last night they ranged from The Killers, Foster The People and The Strokes to Bowie's Starman. Hats off to whomever picked that grouping! This looks to be shaping up as the go to hip little bar in downtown.

I have a problem: I'm addicted to the tacos at Iron Horse. I rate them right up there with Tienda Mexicana as my absolute favorites without going to Southwest Detroit. But for the month of September they have chicken shawarma tacos on special and OH MY GOD I HAVE TASTED THE SKY AND IT WAS AMAZING!!!! I actually went here two days in a row because they were so damned good. Add these to the menu or prepare for arson. #justkidding #maybe #addthemnow The normal chorizo tacos are my staple -- not only are they moist and flavorful but they are BIG. Like big enough that I can only eat 3. (point of reference I can put down 4 at Imperial or Tienda -- 5 if I feel like making myself feel utterly disgusting) (I'm a little ashamed to have admitted that) Moving on...my usual dining cohorts have also tried the chicken, steak, and buffalo shrimp tacos and come away raving. I also have a friend who swears that their burger is one of, if not the best he's had. Considering I frequently dine with this individual at places like Redcoat Tavern and Vinsetta Garage, that's pretty high praise. But I can't tear myself away from the tacos. Like I said, I have a problem. The bar is well-stocked -- especially if you like whisky. They have a good beer selection and a variety of craft cocktails for happy hour indulgence if you can somehow tear yourself away from the tacos. The bar itself is small but very cool with an industrial style decor and a bit of a biker theme, but that shouldn't dissuade anyone from attending. There are a wide variety of folks from lawyers to rockers to be found here and it's a very chill atmosphere. If you're a fan of great bar food (TACOS TACOS I CAN'T FEEL MY FACE) then Iron Horse is a must-try. Go there now and demand that the shawarma tacos become a permanent staple.

If you are going to order an appetizer, order the esquites. If you want to add a meat, the chorizo is a good option. It's served with a handful of tortilla chips. The nachos are huge and they are good too. The four of us ordered Mexican food. The burrito and the tacos were ok but the taco salad and the tamales were better. Overall the food is alright but not real authentic. The portions are large but the food was average. Maybe next time we should order the pizza.

I've been dying to come to Iron Horse since it opened a couple months ago and had rave reviews. Having see a show at Main Art my coworker and I stopped in for dinner. Walking in the place was very dark and super small, we were seated in a spot that was so tight the server couldn't walk by so we asked to move, to an equally small spot but better situated. The menu was slightly confusing, I had heard this place referred to as "tex-mex" and while there were a few items on the menu resembling tex-mex the over all menu theme was eclectic. We started off with chips and salsa which was a whopping $5! Yikes! The chips were good and fresh as was the salsa, my preference was the verse. For dinner I had the ala carte tacos: one mahi mahi and one chicken. I couldn't even eat the fish taco it was just not good at all. The chicken taco was decent. I also had a side of rice and beans which were completely bland and lacking in flavor. I had higher hopes for the food here but I was left disappointed. However, our server was very nice and attentive.

This place is awesome. Hands down, one of the best brunch spots in Metro Detroit. I dined here this past weekend with my mom and dad. I ordered the stuffed avocados which were two halves of avocado stuffed with eggs and topped with bacon and cojita cheese (i asked for no pico) and the plate is complimented with poblano sauce. I also ordered a side of maple sausage and a fruit cup. Everything was delicious and our server/bartender was humorous, without being overbearing. I'd definitely go back!

Brought my mom here for dinner tonight because she loves Mexican and I've been wanting to try this place. It is tucked on 4th street right next to the Royal Oak Music Theatre. Be prepared to pay to park. The entrance has large windows that open to the outside, but no outdoor seating. We had a craving for cheese and decided to get their cheese bread, which was essentially just a cheese pizza cut into strips. Crust was crunchy and really tasty, but the center was a bit greasy and floppy. Came with marinara and ranch to dip in though which made up for it. We got the steak sandwich and 3 tacos: mahi, chicken, and chorizo and shared. The steak sandwich was sirloin and cooked perfectly to medium and set on a hamburger bun with some horseradish sauce. Sauce was tangy and great, but lacked the kick of normal horseradish sauce. The tacos though. Fantastic. Especially the mahi. The seasoning is very simple, and it allows the fish itself to come through in the taco. Topped with their verde salsa, it was on point. The worst of the three was the chorizo, which tasted a bit sweeter than I'm used to. Overall still fantastic. The service was friendly and very attentive. We came at the peak of rush hour and had to wait about 30 mins for our food after our appetizer. The ambiance is dark/saloon-like and bar oriented, so it was great people watching during the wait. Overall, well worth it. I will be back for the drinks that I didn't get this time.

Nifty eclectic little place. More of a bar that serves great food than a restaurant. Crowd: diverse. Everything from professionals to hipsters, and everything in between. Drinks: Primarily cocktails. Everything hand made. No soda gun. Good drinks. Slightly short on the light pours. Really bad wine selection, but that is not what you come here for. Every top shelf liquor imaginable, including Pappy. Food: Order the Esquites with chorizo and you will be in food nirvana. Tacos have a double tortilla with melted cheese in between. Pizza by the slice good too. Burgers just eh. They once had the best tamales I've ever eaten; changed source and now they are not even edible.

This is the best Mexican food I've ever had short of my friend's authentic Mexican she makes from scratch. We had the wet burrito with chicken and the nachos with chicken. We were able to finish the nachos together but took most of the burrito home. The chips are fresh and delicious, and the ingredients in the nachos are evenly distributed rather than a pile of chips topped with the cheese, meat, and other items. I've been wishing for amazing Mexican and Iron Horse is the answer. It's a little trendy or hipster, but the service is friendly. We had drinks right away and food in less than ten minutes. They were out of the tres leche cake, but I'll be back soon to try it! Their liquor options were impressive and El Rojo beer by Griffin Claw was very good. Also good on the drink menu was the Mexican Mule. Enjoy!!!

Pretty much have stuck to the Mexican dishes - burrito, tacos, etc. all great. Will move on to the ribs and chicken sandwich next, which I hear are really good. If you can get a seat, you are golden. Service could be a bit faster. And if you order a drink, the mixologist tends to be backed up because they don't rush great drinks. Hopefully they can acquire more space. Unless Imperial is walking distance, this really is a better choice.

We came in for an early lunch after the R.O. flea market on a Sunday. It was pretty slow giving us our choice of seating. The front of the house is open with open-air seating by the windows, a few low-tops and a few spots at the bar. The back of the house is really dimly lit and honestly, at first I didn't even realize there was a seating area in back. The hostess was friendly, sat us immediately and the bartender came straight away to take our drink order. She was pretty fantastic throughout the meal...thanks Laura. She made my Purple Gang cocktail and another that my girl enjoyed while we waited for the food to come out. Both were refreshing and light with great fresh fruit in each of them. Torn between the a la carte tacos and the chicken tamales, Laura recommended the latter. They came out with beans and rice, verde sauce on the side, house-made hot sauce on the side and resting in a cheesy cream sauce. I liked them but I'd try the tacos next time. The hot sauce was a little ketchup-like but had a nice heat on the back end. The tamales were nice while the beans and rice were a little bland. The hot sauce helped them along though. My girl had a chicken sandwich that was really messy to eat and she liked it but didn't love it. Food aside, the atmosphere here is kind of cool...black accents to bring out the wood flooring, and a kind of modern feel to the joint. Service was great and the manager even came by to see what I thought of the tamales since they changed them up. I'd love to try the pizza and I'll be back but I think this place is still finding it's footing. Definitely worth trying though.

Oh, it's like that Royal Oak? As if Ronin, ROMT and Bistro 82 weren't enough to hold down the block, now you let a freaking horse gallop in with succulent spirits and tantalizing tacos unlike the city has ever seen? Ok, I'll bite. And drink... This corner is now the best part of town as far as I'm concerned when it comes to dining out. Iron Horse steps in the arena with a sensationally sensual interior, cool out music and a drink menu that schools. More importantly, the food is delightful and priced surprisingly well considering the high caliber of the ingredients. My drink was called the Purple Gang and it tasted like a bottle of blueberry grape Clearly Canadian circa 1995. Refreshing yes, but I couldn't confirm if it had alcohol because it was so unbelievably delicious. I also didn't feel a buzz until I chased it with a Soft Parade. I did feel something after eating the steak tacos, however. I think it was lust. Brilliantly marinated and clever portions of small steak slices were sprinkled with cilantro and wrapped in two of the best tasting and perfectly cooked tortillas known to humanity. Your boy is a certifiable, die hard taco enthusiast and I must convey to you that these sons of bitches are other wordly. Skip the boring rice and beans for $3, order another taco instead. Our waitress was effective but had the personality of a 55 year old sage painted wall made of plaster and asbestos. The host wasn't friendly either (uhh, isnt it your JOB to be nice?) and this unprovoked arrogance still doesn't take them down a notch. We dropped in around 3 PM on a Friday afternoon and were able to immediately enjoy the place in its entirety with a few other patrons who were seemingly in heaven as well. Iron Horse is that deal. $75 bill for 4 tacos, 3 mixed drinks, a beer and a monumental salad between the two of us. Simply a must stop if you're in town.

Rob, our waiter was so handsome that I was thankful for the horrible lighting to hide my blushing cheeks. With that being said though the lighting here reminded me of the "mystery meals" where you eat in dark with only the light of a candle. We literally couldn't even see the food it was that dark! Yikes. We had the esquites with steak and the chicken tamales and split both of them. The esquites needed a little twist of lime and a pinch of salt to wake up the flavors but overall was very good! It reminded me of elote/mexican street corn but in salad form. Back of the house was kind enough to split the tamales for us and those too were great! They put some type of sauce on top that I was literally scraping off the plate- it was that good! The refried beans were standard but the mexican rice was lacking any type of creativity and so boring that I didn't even touch it again after one bite. Overall, the staff was super nice, food was good, and they don't price gouge you like most places in RO so I'd recommend trying this place out! Just don't forget your flashlight ;)

I usually dislike fusion restaurants. Like, all of them. Why? Because I like it when restaurants specialize instead of trying to combine cultures that are not meant to be combined. But, sometimes, the combination yeilds something wonderful, like this little gem here. Here's my impressions, as I usually roll. Good: -The food. SO. GOOD. I ordered the ribs, which I was iffy about because this place isn't a BBQ joint, but oh em gee if the meat didn't just melt off the bone. -Dat steak burger. Damn. -Awesome and nice wait staff. -Dat tequila rack on the wall tho (But I don't drink). Bad: -Kind of dark in front of the place at night. They could use a little more illumination inside. -Tacos are kind of weird. I wouldn't recommend it. -Some tables are uneven. This is super annoying for me, since it can cause me to spill my water. -No ice in the water is cool at first, but over time the chilled water in the bottle gets warmer and that's not cool. -I'd rather have fries with my food instead of chips. I wonder if there's a way you can substitute? Notes: This place is pretty awesome. The pros definitely outweigh the cons. This would be a 5 star, but the cons are kind of..well..con-y. but hey 4 stars is awesome. I'd totally come back!! You go girl!

What a great place! The food here is very good, the staff is very well informed, and the atmosphere is extremely comfortable. I had the Buffalo shrimp blue corn taco by suggestion of a fantastic bartender, Laura. She didn't steer me wrong, it was a wonderful dinner. She filled me in on all of the ins and outs of the restaurant as well as explained brunch, which sounds amazing. I will be going back to try that out. And I won't forget to have one of the house special Bloody Marys made with pickled infused vodka, or a strawberry infused tequila margarita both sound delicious

Just had a wet steak burrito, which was fantastic in taste and quantity. You pay a little more than a normal taco shop, but it is well worth it. The server was very nice and also met the owner who obviously has high attention to detail and knows how to run a restaurant. Laid back and hip ambiance. Drinks: Purple gang- blackberry infused buffalo trace, contreiu. not what I expected as it didn't have a strong bourbon taste but it was pretty refreshing and not overly sweet. I wouldn't get it if you want a typical bourbon drink, but I would if you want to try something new. Liberator collins- light and delicious, would be a safe go to drink that would appeal to the masses. Angry ginger- super spicy, like jalapeno spicy drink as I think the tequila was jalapeno tequila....can't really remember. I liked it but my girlfriends could barely drink it. If you want to try something on the edge this is it. Food: Chicken taco Mahi mahi taco- really good; It had a layer of cheese between two corn tortillas. The mahi mahi was more well done than i would expect it resulting in me forgetting that i had fish versus chicken, but it didnt change the fact that it was still good. Cheese and pepperoni pizza- This was excellent. It was not a heavily oiled or doughy pizza. It is a great happy hour snack...great thing is that you can get this by the slice. Chips, salsa and queso-nothing special but good. I wouldn't get this next time as I would want to try something else. Atmosphere: Is gorgeous. It reminded me of a Downtown Detroit or Chicago bar. It really is not something you would expect in Downtown Royal Oak, but that is why I can't wait to go back. It is a cool place to go grab a drink and a bite to eat. Service: I guess the staff was short so it took a bit of time to get to us, but the bartender did an amazing job hustling around making sure she can get to people as quick as possible. She was especially great once another waitress came in...poor girl had to deal with 5 girls asking tons of questions about the menu. Overall, I recommend this place!

Eating out is 50% service and 50% food. Our service lacked, while the food made up for it. BE PREPARED to wait a long time if you come during peak hours. We waited close to 2 hours for a table for 3. There is not much waiting space. Once we did get our table, we ordered our appetizers immediately. Our server had not come back to take our main course order. I had to ask the hostess to find our server so we could order. She was also not attentive when our food came. Food though was very good. They have a mix of Mexican, pizza, and burgers. We got chicken tacos and the wet burrito. The burrito is extra for meat which is kind of a rip off

Cool and fun place. Loved the food and ambiance. The tacos were delicious and cheap! I got the mahi mahi taco and it had a citrusy taste to it which made it delicious. The esquites (Mexican corn salad) with chicken was very good. I added it to the inside of my taco which made it so much better. It was like a salsa. Order it with extra chips because they don't give you very much chips. Not a big restaurant so I wouldn't go here with a big group of people. The manager and waiters were exceptionally nice and friendly. This isn't my favorite Mexican restaurant (imperial is always #1 on my list) and the menu doesn't have much to offer but I would definitely come back. It's a fun place to hang out and the windows open to the outside (like its neighbor restaurant ronin) which makes it fun and enjoyable.

Why is there a picture of Evel Knievel in the dining room? He is neither iron nor a horse, and frankly, his presence upsets me, as I'm old enough to remember his ill-fated stunt in the summer of '73 when he strapped C4 to his chest and attempted to clear a school bus filled with some of the cutest puppies the world has ever known. The smell of burnt flesh and soft whimpering shall haunt me for the remainder of my days. "Dead puppies and craft cocktails don't mix." That was the consensus at our table, which quickly changed when our nachos arrived. The nachos are so good it will temporarily make you forget about all those dead puppies and the lunatic whose overpowering ego and quest for immortality led to The Day the Cuteness Died. Our next order consisted of a few sandwiches, a burrito, and several tacos. All of the tacos were amazing, and quite filling, especially if you're eating with a heavy heart. I ordered three, and ate 1.5. I took the taco remnants home and found they were equally good microwaved the following day -- although with each bite my mind transitioned back to how the dogs, along with the shell of the school bus, were buried in a mass grave in Scottsdale, Arizona. There was just much dirt piled up in that arid landscape, unlike our tres leches cake, which was incredibly moist. We ordered this delicious dessert for our friend John, since we totally forgot his birthday. John loves cake. And horses. And puppies that are alive and not burnt to a crisp. At least this place delivered on one of those things.

I visited Iron Horse for the first time because of the ratings I saw on Yelp. It was an easy walk from my visit to the Brownie Gourmet down 4th, and the staff was pretty cool. It's a trendy sort of crowd and relatively new. I sat at the bar and let another kind patron help me place my order. I ordered Steak Tacos, Fish Tacos (as recommended), Steak Nachos and a salad with Chicken Salsa. The dinner came out to be $60 with each taco at $4 a piece. This is pretty steep for a taco, but i decided to see what the hype was about. While I was disappointed, my picky husband seemed to like them, so not a total loss. I can't say I loved anything, but I didn't hate anything either. I removed a star from the rating because I saw a bunch of gnats or flies circling over the middle table where a group was celebrating with several rounds of drinks. This was directly beneath the chandelier, and the front of the tiny establishment was wide open with a fully retractable window, so this may be the reason. Either way, it was a cool little place and I can see it being pretty popular as more people learn it is open.

Run here. Stagger home. I love the craft cocktails, no matter how funky the description sounds... Try it On today's visit, I enjoyed a margarita and the Esquitos . The margarita was amazing and everything I wanted, craved, needed after my escape from the home ( there is a teething 10 month old there waiting for my return). The Esquitos were wonderful. Sweet spicy full of flavor, unique since I have never experienced this item on any menu before.... I really was not sure what to expect. Expect delicious! This was my second visit both visits were exceptional.

After reading reviews on Yelp, I was excited to feed into my taco addictions. But maybe I had too high expectations because it wasn't as great as I thought it would be. We went at 5:30pm on a Tuesday and got a table, no problem. The waitress was nice and the service was good. I ordered three tacos: tofu, chicken, and steak. I liked the tofu and chicken, but the steak was overcooked and so chewy to a point that it was like jerky. What I didn't like were the shells. I am used to having soft corn shells, but they were so fried. After eating the tacos, I felt so gross like I just drank a cup of grease. I guess it's my personal preference. Was the food bad? No, it is average. Would it be worth coming back for tacos? I think not. I would stick to my go to taco place (Tienda) in Madison Heights or Imperial.

Met a girlfriend here for dinner this past Wednesday night, Aug 26. It is hard to see from the street, but it is right next to Ronin & the theatre off 4th street. I arrived about 10 min after my friend, and when I got to the table it took another 10 min for us to be waited on. Besides that, food was delicious! We started with the nachos, and all I can say is OMG... It was huge!! (That's what she said). We decided to order them without meat for $11, but you can add a variety of meats for an additional $4 if you'd like. Great flavor, but wow! Had we known they were that large, we agreed we would have split that as our meal. My friend ordered the tamales and really enjoyed them. I got a chicken taco $3, with a side of rice & beans for an additional $3. Wish I could tell you how that was, but I was so full from the nachos I didn't even touch it. Hopefully it tastes good reheated! ;) Would definitely like to go back and try some other things on their menu. Great addition to Royal Oak!

I went with a group of friends to check this place out and I wasn't disappointed. I love tequila and so this place was perfect for me. I ordered a margarita and it was one of the best I've had. They have a lot of unique drinks on their menu but I'm not that adventurous. My boyfriend tried the Pink Panther and Honey Badger and said he really liked it. We got the full rack of ribs and it was incredible. It falls off the bone as advertised. I felt like the desserts were a little disappointing. I was expecting more from the strawberry nachos. The tres leches cake was pretty good but nothing I would crave. My only criticism is that our waitress really didn't want to split up the check in three. I know it can be difficult to split the bill in a semi large party, but I think there's a better way to handle it than just say you can't especially since this is an up and coming place in a young area. They could have asked if we wanted the bill split or offer some ways to do it. It's not a big deal but it's just a little something that rubbed me he wrong way. TL;DR: This place is a cool, fun place to check out. Definitely get the ribs but find dessert somewhere else.

I was really craving tacos and my friend Rachel recommended Iron Horse, and I'm so glad that she did. The service was a bit wonky at first, but it greatly improved toward the end of the night. We had guacamole and salsa to start, and then she ordered some meat-based tacos, whereas I had the tofu and mahi mahi tacos. I think if I were doing this all over again I would have ordered only two tacos, not three. They're much more substantial than a typical street taco, and they are very oily. The mahi mahi were outstanding - so were the tofu, but the mahi mahi was my absolute favorite. The fish was cooked perfectly. I was impressed with the fact that they forgot my tofu taco, and when I let them know, they brought me two, and didn't charge me for either of them. I feel like they were so accountable, which makes me much more inclined to come back - and also, the mahi mahi tacos were so good that I couldn't not come back.

Went here for the first time today. I have heard good things about this place. The drink menu was sad. The food menu was all over the place. They have tacos, which I thought that was it but also ribs, pizza, and some other misc things thrown in. The food was subpar at best. We decided to stay with the "mexican" items on the menu. My bf got the smothered burrito with tofu and it had no taste. I got the nachos and there was nothing great about them. Their hot sauces were actually very sweet with no heat at all. Overall save your time to go to Imperial in Ferndale.

The only reason I didn't give this place 5 stars is because the menu is a bit limited and the drinks on the expensive side (at least compared to the other items). Everything else however was fantastic. The tacos are served in two corn tortillas held together with melted cheese! All of the dishes I saw had generous portions of meat or fish and were served with a variety of interesting salsas and dressings. A few weeks ago I had a strawberry nachos dessert which was delicious (great to share with a group) but unfortunately I noticed yesterday it was gone. One of the comments on here stated that they do not have a restroom but that is not true- it's a bit hidden but it's back there! I hope they keep adding menu items- excited to go back again!

A friend of mine and I had a great dinner there last week. We had the queso for an app and split the ribs. The queso was fantastic, had a good kick of spice without sacrificing flavor! The ribs we awesome we both thought they were cooked just right and had enough sauce. The coleslaw was good as well... The real star of the show was the purple gang drink. It is amazing. Go there to try that at least if nothing else! We will definitely be back!

Great addition to downtown Royal Oak with fantastic tacos, pizza, cocktails and brunch. We've had a variety of tacos, burritos, biscuits and chorizo gravy, and huevos rancheros and all have been excellent. I am a big fan of their blackberry infused bourbon. It is next to ROMT, so parking and wait time can be a challenge if there is a big show. My only negative experience was a wait time on a Saturday evening because it is a small space. We showed up at 8 pm with party of 4, wait was estimated at 30-45 minutes. At 9pm, I walked through the restaurant area on way to restroom and saw two empty four-person tables. We were finally seated at one of those tables at 9:15p. Not happy they kept us waiting for so long when there were empty tables. By the time we got our food at 10pm, they had turned down the lights and turned up the music. We weren't planning on having dinner at 10pm, but everyone was happy with service and food once we were seated. We've had three other wonderful experiences so going to chalk it up to bad timing during prime time on a Saturday.

I went there twice in one week during my visit to Detroit. The bar must be really good but I wouldn't know because I don't drink. Friends brought me there for the food and i was impressed. Order the Esquites for appetizer. It's a mound of delicious sweet corn freshly sliced from the cob amid some salsa, dressings that's amazing. Served with (not enough) Nachos. Tacos are also delicious. We ordered steak, mahi-mahi and Carnitas and found all of them as good as the best we had in Southern California where Mexican food is probably even better than in Mexico. Anyway, there is little or no wait if you go around dinner time. The crowd arrives later and then it's packed! Service is very friendly and knowledgeable. I recommend it highly.

What a great place. I really enjoy Iron Horse. The staff is very friendly. The only thing that drops it down for me is the bar service is extremely slow...unless you are the only one there. I have been there 6x in the last 6 weeks. Yep, I must have a problem. I have tried much of the menu and what I've had has been very good. Nachos and Pizza are excellent, but if you order nachos, bring a couple of friends. HUGE. For some reason, their house Bloody Mary's name escapes me, but do yourself a favor. ORDER IT. One of the best around. Stop in and enjoy! Cheers!

After reading the pdf menu I decided to give this place a shot. My girlfriend and I were pleasantly surprised with what we found. Being suckers for mexican cuisine I had the tacos and my girlfriend had the wet burrito, both were amazing. The carnitas and mahi mahi tacos were absolutely exceptional. Also, if you're there ask for the ex-girlfriend house made hot sauce. The ambiance was comfortable and they played all of my girlfriend's favorite music (band of horses, radiohead, etc). The draft pints were a bit pricey but I hear they have a happy hour from 3-6. I'll be coming back to Iron Horse, for sure.

Came in for some food and a couple beers.. Not sure why they charge $6.50 for a pint of modelo, but I didn't realize it until the bill came. $13 for 2 pints of beer and another $15 for chorizo nachos that were not much more than queso dip with beans and meat. Very underwhelming and after tip spending $34 seems a little absurd. Hope somebody sees this (owner/manager) and has a reply for the overpriced drinks/food.. Because I'll just go next door to Ronin and drink/eat cheaper, have a nicer ambiance/quieter setting for my money. Much. To. Improve.

PERFECTION!!!!!!! It's a small bar with excellent cocktails and killer food. Not greasy bar food either. Quality stuff made from scratch! Food that won't weigh you down and put you in food coma for the rest of the night. I had the Espiritas(sp?) appetizer. Fresh sweet corn with house made tortilla chips, cilantro, queso fresco, carnitas (pulled pork) and other awesome ingredients I can't remember after a night of drinking. My companion had the chorizo tacos and they were excellent. For dessert we had strawberry nachos and they were perfect. House made tortilla chips rolled in cinnamon and sugar covered with sliced fresh strawberries, honey, chocolate, and marshmallow! Yes it's loud in here but I'm loud dammit so I like it! It's lively like a good small club in New York City. If you're looking for romantic and quiet then go to the library. Bottom line.....If you want to have a kick ass time with fun energetic people and great food and drinks then it's Iron Horse for the win!

Who said one has to go down to Mexican Town to have a proper Taco. This place oozes hipster with a nice big frame of Evil Knieval and the best looking Chandler I have ever seen. We ordered 4 tacos chicken and steak and a side of cheese bread wow . They cleverly hide cheese in the first tortilla with onions and cilantro. The service was great and Modelo on tap is always a bonus.

Extremely impressed first visit it is a new restaurant which I never do. I was invited to like on Facebook and am glad I did. The food was great Nachos rocked with Chorizo yum ask for salsa I did. The Chicken Tamales so tender and nicely spiced, rice and beans well done and fresh no hard pellets like holding too long. Pizza was also very good. Service very attentive by more than one person. Great food. A little too loud for this old guy, but amazing cocktails, friendly fast service, and nice portions. We had the Esquites appetizer with Chorizo : excellent. I enjoyed my wet steak burrito, my wife had 2 tacos, and my daughter had the chicken tamales. She had to take half home. We were told a 45 minute wait for a table (on a Friday at 9), but we were seated within 15 minutes. Would definately return.

Simply amazing! Best tacos in town! Any town, anywhere. Wonderfully pleasant staff and unbelievable food at a reasonable price! Can't wait to get back there a lot! Craving tacos, I did a search for something new. First let me say, if I had realized it was Tuesday, I would have taken a pic for Taco Tuesday. Oh well... Here is the small restaurant on 4th next to Royal Oak Music Theater. They were smart with their signage, making it easy to find. Ale Mary's should take note. You walk in to be greeted by two young ladies. The ambience is dark and intimate, the music is a little loud, otherwise it's quite cozy. The menu. Not a ton of options, which is good. Makes decision making easier. Oh, they have a nice drink menu, but I decided to skip the alcohol tonight. Back to the food. I ordered a chicken and a carnitas taco. My husband ordered a mahi mahi and tofu taco. The tacos were $3-$4 each, which I didn't think was too bad. We also added on beans and rice for $3 and chips and salsa for $5. The chips and salsa came with a delicious red salsa and a tangy tomatillo one, which I was not a fan of. Rice and beans were good. Now, I did not try the tofu tacos, however, my husband said they were really good and the texture of the tofu was good. My tacos were good. I loved the shills were slightly fried, giving them a moist and chewy, yet crispy texture. As far as the meat inside of them, I couldn't tell the difference between the chicken and carnitas. Not much flavor on either end. However, still good because of the flavors from the salsa, lime, onions, shells, etc. Service. I mentioned two ladies as hostesses. I feel like they should have maybe had one hostess and replace the other with another server. There were only two servers. This place isn't huge, but I think if they had an extra server, it would have been better. The two that were there didn't even have time to give to their customers because they were so busy. Keep in mind, though it was a tad slow, the service was still good. That's it. Take what you'd like from this review. It was good, but not the best ever, hence the 4 stars. I'll go back though!

Excellent food and service. Great menu and great layout/space. Very inviting and an awesome adaptive re-use of the building. Exactly what Royal Oak needs -a place that can hang with what's going on downtown/midtown and in Ferndale. Only reason not a 5 star is for the craft cocktails they are making, the ice they use isn't good enough. The small ice machine chips water down their cocktails that are served over ice, but the strained ones were terrific. Pours are a little light. Nice food. Nice ambience. Good server. Too many carbs. We came at a quiet time (3pm on Sat). The server (also our bartender) was lovely. Food was very tasty too. The only thing stopping me from giving this place 5 stars is the tacos lacked filling. I had the mahi mahi fish taco - I ordered two of them but had to pile all the ingredients into one to make it filling. It's cheap enough at $4 a taco so not a big deal. Also they have excellent margaritas. No sour mix. Fresh ingredients. This place probably deserves a 4.5 stars!

Rarely am I this compelled to write a review right after visiting a restaurant. My girlfriend came in on a Thursday night without hearing a lot about this spot and we were blown away. We had the esquites as an appetizer and shared 5 tacos for the main course. The tacos are the best we've had in the area, significantly better than the taco place in Ferndale. My favorites were the carnitas and chorizo. I really also enjoyed the ambiance. The music was modern - Spoon, Thom Yorke, Shins. The service was top notch: our waiter was attentive and gave perfect recommendations - especially the berry infused bourbon drink. At the end of our meal we had the pleasure or meeting one of the owners who checked up on us. This is immediately going in our rotation (hopefully it doesn't get too popular so we can get in easy).

How is this place getting so many good reviews? The service wasn't very good, but I'll give them some slack because I get it - they get busy. The food however, was greasy and cold. I had to stop eating the tacos because it felt like I was eating grease. The guac was mediocre at best. I think I tried one of their cocktails but ended up switching to whiskey on the rocks. If you trust a place that serves tacos and pizza, go for it. In the future, I will not. Over and out.

I didn't know what to expect when this place opened. It has a wide variety of styles of food within a small menu, from tacos to pizza, which made me question it at first. But after trying a good portion of the menu from several visits, I concede that I'm a fan. The staff is friendly, the interior is sexy and cool. You could bring a first date here, have a business meeting, a casual lunch, or a nice dinner. Great selection of beers as well. I think I may be the Duke already. :,P - Try the esquites(spelling) with steak! It's my favorite!

Unfortunately , It was not even close to the reviews I had read here, and even my friends had the same experience. Drinks were okay, but the tacos were way too oilly and bland to have them again. Good thing was the ambiance , and the guys working over there were kind enough to ask us how we were doing. So thumbs up for the people and the place, down for the food. So, our search for a place that can outdo Imperial in ferndale is still on !!

Based on all the good reviews, I REALLY really wanted to like this place. Sadly, I just...didn't. My fiance and I stopped in here last night for dinner around 730. The place looked pretty packed and it's also pretty small in comparison to other restaurants. We were seated after about a 10 minute wait - not bad. Our table was quite possibly THE WORST table in the entire restaurant. There's the front section of the restaurant that offers a bit more space with big open windows, but we were seated in the back where they had horrible "wrap around" bench seating that makes it feel like you're eating with 15 other people. We were right smack in the middle of two groups with about 8 inches of space in between each table. Every time a person would leave from their seat, I had to hold our plates to make sure they didn't accidentally get knocked on the ground by someone's backside. The waiter barely had room to turn around between tables, that's how tight it was... Our service was below average. Our waiter spoke extremely fast and was only there long enough to take our orders and bring out the check. I don't even remember what he looked like he was moving so fast! This could have been be due to the high volume of people, but my position still stands. We placed orders for the cheese bread appetizer, steak nachos, two chicken tacos and two steak tacos. After about 15 minutes of waiting with no appetizer, I could feel the hangriness setting in. I figured our app should be arriving any minute, and before the inner Monster could show itself, a runner was placing the cheese bread down in front of us. The bread itself was pretty good. It was basically a sauceless pizza, size wise. The marinara dipping sauce was gross and tasted like tomato soup. Ranch dressing was good. After we started eating the bread, my next thought was "I really hope our food doesn't come out right after this, I really hate that" .... No sooner than I thought it, it had become a reality. Now, the food runner/Tetris Master was arranging plates, serving dishes, glasses, and pizza trays in front of us trying to figure out the best set up for all this food sitting on top of the World's Tiniest Table. Seriously, I have to wonder if anyone even measured or if they just said f*** it this is good enough...tight squeeze to say the least. Steak tacos were good, the steak on it's own was weak. Same goes for the chicken. Tacos became better with the addition of the "Ex Girlfriend" habanero salsa. Salsa verde was basically all lime. Nachos were piled high with all the "stuff" - cheese, queso fresco, lettuce, refried beans, etc etc. In retrospect I would've liked to have tried a different meat on the nachos, just to see what else they could do but I was happy with the steak. All in all, the restaurant was a little loud, tiny, not enough room between tables, not the greatest service I've encountered, but the food was enough for an additional star. Will I try again? Sure. Will it be soon? I wouldn't hold my breath.

I have run out of superlatives to describe this place. It is soooo good that I'm willing to suffer the draconian perking in Royal Oak. I had steak tacos and a couple margs. They were both perfect. I will be back. The bartender, whose name I can't spell, was charming and friendly and mixed a tremendous margarita. Ambient music was cool and best of all: NO TELEVISIONS. As for you, don't go there. That would only lessen the chances of me finding a spot at the bar. It's okay if you sit at the tables.

Showed up on a Saturday night with 4 others, was told we would have a 45 minute wait, it's a pretty small place, so that wasn't surprising. The first thing we noticed was how loud it was in there and that we had to yell to converse. We commented that it would probably be better after we were seated because the seating area would surely be quieter. We were happy to be seated in about 25 minutes in the back far corner of the restaurant. After a visit by our waiter with menus & water, we settled on our orders. Two in our party ordered the tamales, only to have the waiter come back out about 5 minutes later to report that he'd forgotten to tell us they were out of those. They picked tacos instead, it's a fairly small menu, so not a lot of other options. Soon the manager came over to apologize also, so nice touch there, too bad they didn't tell us before ordering. The food was good, as were the drinks, everyone was pleased with their meal and our waiter was a nice young guy who was really friendly and trying hard to keep us happy. The food was a reasonable price point, the drinks are pricey, so 1 was my limit ($11 for a bourbon drink). The real problem that would keep me from coming back was the volume of the music and the overall noise level. The clientele was mixed with lots of late 20's & 30's but also quite a lot in the 50+ category like my friends and I. We had to yell to talk and It seemed the music kept getting louder. We finally asked the waiter to please adjust the volume, and the young man and his date next to us seconded our request. Nothing changed and it seemed the music got louder. Finally we asked the manager and they did turn it down, but it was still pretty loud. I didn't even mind the music choices, they were playing a lot of my favorites - I just wanted to be able to talk. It's a restaurant, not a dance club, I don't understand why they feel the need to blast the music to the point of making you yell. It really did diminish our experience because we had wanted to chat and it made casual conversation with the person across or at the end of the table a challenge. So - food good, prices good, good (slightly slow) service, cute place, fix the noise level and acoustics.

My girlfriend and I enjoyed our evening at Iron Horse. Both fans of bourbon, we ordered primarily bourbon and/or whiskey cocktails which were nicely balanced. Combined we tried the Kentucky Mule, Evel Fashioned...well, basically all the bourbon cocktails which we highly suggest. For dinner, I tried the Steak Sandwich which came with baked potato chips and a pickle. The sandwich's textures were evenly dispersed and quite satisfying. My girlfriend ordered the IHRO Salad with tofu. As a vegan, she felt this was a tasty and filling salad. We'll be revisiting Iron Horse soon...perhaps for the tacos!

Stopped in for lunch. Very small, maybe 50 seats and no TV (but loud funky music like you are in Ferndale). Menu was abbreviated, as well as the drafts. Has great potential (good service) but one issue is the restrooms- go out, turn right and then two lefts and they are shared with two other establishments in the building, most not ideal. RO had great offerings so to make it, they need to step up their game and make this experience better. Staff was rock solid.

We had a little bit of a tough time getting the bartender's attention cause it was really busy (can't blame them a lot - its Royal Oak and its always busy during the peak hours). Overall it was a good experience. I would suggest trying it out during a week night so its not as crowded.

I'm so happy to see a place like this in Royal Oak to counteract the BWW, corporate eatery wave that's making Royal Oak less competitive with restaurants in Ferndale and Detroit. Great atmosphere, outstanding cocktails, and tasty food. The tacos are larger that the ones served at The Imperial, and more generously filled. They are very good (I had the tofu, mahi mahi, and chicken), but not quite as creatively designed as the ones in Ferndale. We also split the esquites as an appetizer and it was an interesting combination of textures and flavors. For me, it was the walk in the zero degree night just for the music! Hearing Franz Ferdinand, The Smiths, and The Cure made my drinks and meal that much more enjoyable. Looking forward to this being a regular go-to place for my husband and friends and me in our hometown. The one thing I couldn't quite figure out was the presence of pizza on a southwestern/Mexican street food-vibed menu. We didn't try it, so maybe it's worth being there, but it made the menu seem like it had a bit of an identity crisis. I was thinking that maybe this was the old Tania's Pizza and maybe they wanted to put an inherited pizza oven to good use.

This place rocks my world. Best tacos in town by far. Only place that I have truly enjoyed corn tortillas over flour tortillas because they toss a little cheese in between the two tacos to keep them from falling apart. The tofu taco is amazing(don't forget the slaw), the steak taco is always great, and the new buffalo shrimp taco is awesome. The esquites is one of the better appetizers in town. Even their burger is awesome. Don't even get me started on brunch. From the fig yogurt to the fat Elvis, I can't get enough of Ironhorse's brunch. Their pizza and breadsticks are amazing! I live in Lansing and visited here before going to the Royal Oak theatre. So it's a good 1.5 hour drive from me but I'm planning to make a trip back here just to have their pizza again. Definitely would recommend, especially if you're going because you're seeing a show at the theatre because it's right next to it.

Stopped in to check this place out and count me as a fan. The staff is fantastic. Very outgoing, witty, and fun. The food is amazing. I tried a few different items, cheese bread, pizza slice, Mahi mahi tacos, Chorizo tocos and I wouldn't be able to choose just one the next time I go back. The drink menu is eclectic and fresh. If youre looking to dry something different, I highly suggest this place. The only reason it doesn't get a 5th star is it is just too small. You will almost always be waiting during peak hours.

This is hands down my new favorite spot in Royal Oak!! The atmosphere is perfect (although the music was a little on the loud side) and the drinks/food are amazing. The only major downfall to this place is its size and consequently, it's ability to seat a group of 4+ in a timely manner. The 2 times I have been with a group of 4, we waited between 1.5-2 hours to be seated. So if you find yourself waiting (which you will), grab a spot in the bar area and try one of their many fantastic drinks! I've had both the Liberator Collins and the Kentucky Mule, both perfect. As for dinner, I've been a handful of times now and I can't NOT get the tacos! So so good, especially the mahi mahi. Even though I haven't tried anything else, everything they brought out of the kitchen looked great. If you're looking for a cool, casual place to enjoy some fantastic food and drinks, this is your place!!

Iron horse is a great new addition to Royal Oak. Located next to Royal Oak Music theater, the Iron Horse is small, but not cramped by any means. The aesthetic was awesome with mood lighting and trendy with a touch of vintage decor. The cocktail list is impressive, as the drinks are tasty and strong. I was apprehensive about the menu as it is lighter fare, but was very impressed with the appetizer(corn,avocado,Mexican type dish- drawing blank on the name) and tacos (mahi mahi and chicken) . Definitely a cool little spot to check out.

The food was absolutely phenomenal. The queso dip was the best I've ever had, it was almost a combination of queso and beer cheese soup. We had the wet burritos which were outstanding as well (best mexican in the area). The dessert nachoes and cake were both very good (can't go wrong with strawberries and chocolate). It's a new establishment so the service was quite slow but the manager/owner was great and made sure we had a good experience. All the drinks we had were good too. Overall I was impressed by the place. It's small and the dark sign makes it difficult to find.....we sat right by the window and watched no less than 5 or 6 different people try to get in using the wrong door. The food and service were great. We tried the nacho's and tacos. I would compare the tacos to imperial in Ferndale except they are bigger and in my opinion, taste better. It wasn't real busy for a Saturday night but hopefully word gets out and this place can make it.

Our second visit to this busy and lively, albeit, small, restaurant/bar was exceptional. Found a number of friends having drinks when we walked in so the 25 minute wait went by quickly. Chris is diligent with his cocktails behind the bar, taking care that no one waits too long for a beverage. Food is very good, my wet burrito could have been a tad warmer but was delicious, the salsas are terrific, and Laura was wonderful as our server. She had a big crowd to handle but always had a smile and found a minute for conversation. Big kudos to Tony as he seems to orchestrate how everything runs and it runs really well. Not an easy job in the confines of The Iron Horse. My favorite part is, of course, the music. What a great selection of tunes and last night they ranged from The Killers, Foster The People and The Strokes to Bowie's Starman. Hats off to whomever picked that grouping! This looks to be shaping up as the go to hip little bar in downtown.

I have a problem: I'm addicted to the tacos at Iron Horse. I rate them right up there with Tienda Mexicana as my absolute favorites without going to Southwest Detroit. But for the month of September they have chicken shawarma tacos on special and OH MY GOD I HAVE TASTED THE SKY AND IT WAS AMAZING!!!! I actually went here two days in a row because they were so damned good. Add these to the menu or prepare for arson. #justkidding #maybe #addthemnow The normal chorizo tacos are my staple -- not only are they moist and flavorful but they are BIG. Like big enough that I can only eat 3. (point of reference I can put down 4 at Imperial or Tienda -- 5 if I feel like making myself feel utterly disgusting) (I'm a little ashamed to have admitted that) Moving on...my usual dining cohorts have also tried the chicken, steak, and buffalo shrimp tacos and come away raving. I also have a friend who swears that their burger is one of, if not the best he's had. Considering I frequently dine with this individual at places like Redcoat Tavern and Vinsetta Garage, that's pretty high praise. But I can't tear myself away from the tacos. Like I said, I have a problem. The bar is well-stocked -- especially if you like whisky. They have a good beer selection and a variety of craft cocktails for happy hour indulgence if you can somehow tear yourself away from the tacos. The bar itself is small but very cool with an industrial style decor and a bit of a biker theme, but that shouldn't dissuade anyone from attending. There are a wide variety of folks from lawyers to rockers to be found here and it's a very chill atmosphere. If you're a fan of great bar food (TACOS TACOS I CAN'T FEEL MY FACE) then Iron Horse is a must-try. Go there now and demand that the shawarma tacos become a permanent staple.

If you are going to order an appetizer, order the esquites. If you want to add a meat, the chorizo is a good option. It's served with a handful of tortilla chips. The nachos are huge and they are good too. The four of us ordered Mexican food. The burrito and the tacos were ok but the taco salad and the tamales were better. Overall the food is alright but not real authentic. The portions are large but the food was average. Maybe next time we should order the pizza.

I've been dying to come to Iron Horse since it opened a couple months ago and had rave reviews. Having see a show at Main Art my coworker and I stopped in for dinner. Walking in the place was very dark and super small, we were seated in a spot that was so tight the server couldn't walk by so we asked to move, to an equally small spot but better situated. The menu was slightly confusing, I had heard this place referred to as "tex-mex" and while there were a few items on the menu resembling tex-mex the over all menu theme was eclectic. We started off with chips and salsa which was a whopping $5! Yikes! The chips were good and fresh as was the salsa, my preference was the verse. For dinner I had the ala carte tacos: one mahi mahi and one chicken. I couldn't even eat the fish taco it was just not good at all. The chicken taco was decent. I also had a side of rice and beans which were completely bland and lacking in flavor. I had higher hopes for the food here but I was left disappointed. However, our server was very nice and attentive.

This place is awesome. Hands down, one of the best brunch spots in Metro Detroit. I dined here this past weekend with my mom and dad. I ordered the stuffed avocados which were two halves of avocado stuffed with eggs and topped with bacon and cojita cheese (i asked for no pico) and the plate is complimented with poblano sauce. I also ordered a side of maple sausage and a fruit cup. Everything was delicious and our server/bartender was humorous, without being overbearing. I'd definitely go back!

Brought my mom here for dinner tonight because she loves Mexican and I've been wanting to try this place. It is tucked on 4th street right next to the Royal Oak Music Theatre. Be prepared to pay to park. The entrance has large windows that open to the outside, but no outdoor seating. We had a craving for cheese and decided to get their cheese bread, which was essentially just a cheese pizza cut into strips. Crust was crunchy and really tasty, but the center was a bit greasy and floppy. Came with marinara and ranch to dip in though which made up for it. We got the steak sandwich and 3 tacos: mahi, chicken, and chorizo and shared. The steak sandwich was sirloin and cooked perfectly to medium and set on a hamburger bun with some horseradish sauce. Sauce was tangy and great, but lacked the kick of normal horseradish sauce. The tacos though. Fantastic. Especially the mahi. The seasoning is very simple, and it allows the fish itself to come through in the taco. Topped with their verde salsa, it was on point. The worst of the three was the chorizo, which tasted a bit sweeter than I'm used to. Overall still fantastic. The service was friendly and very attentive. We came at the peak of rush hour and had to wait about 30 mins for our food after our appetizer. The ambiance is dark/saloon-like and bar oriented, so it was great people watching during the wait. Overall, well worth it. I will be back for the drinks that I didn't get this time.

Nifty eclectic little place. More of a bar that serves great food than a restaurant. Crowd: diverse. Everything from professionals to hipsters, and everything in between. Drinks: Primarily cocktails. Everything hand made. No soda gun. Good drinks. Slightly short on the light pours. Really bad wine selection, but that is not what you come here for. Every top shelf liquor imaginable, including Pappy. Food: Order the Esquites with chorizo and you will be in food nirvana. Tacos have a double tortilla with melted cheese in between. Pizza by the slice good too. Burgers just eh. They once had the best tamales I've ever eaten; changed source and now they are not even edible.

This is the best Mexican food I've ever had short of my friend's authentic Mexican she makes from scratch. We had the wet burrito with chicken and the nachos with chicken. We were able to finish the nachos together but took most of the burrito home. The chips are fresh and delicious, and the ingredients in the nachos are evenly distributed rather than a pile of chips topped with the cheese, meat, and other items. I've been wishing for amazing Mexican and Iron Horse is the answer. It's a little trendy or hipster, but the service is friendly. We had drinks right away and food in less than ten minutes. They were out of the tres leche cake, but I'll be back soon to try it! Their liquor options were impressive and El Rojo beer by Griffin Claw was very good. Also good on the drink menu was the Mexican Mule. Enjoy!!!

Been here another 4 times since last review. Lunch was good and quick. Drinks another time were crafty and innovative. Happy hour beer prices rock with, modelo on draft! Pretty much have stuck to the Mexican dishes - burrito, tacos, etc. all great. Will move on to the ribs and chicken sandwich next, which I hear are really good. If you can get a seat, you are golden. Service could be a bit faster. And if you order a drink, the mixologist tends to be backed up because they don't rush great drinks. Hopefully they can acquire more space. Unless Imperial is walking distance, this really is a better choice.

We came in for an early lunch after the R.O. flea market on a Sunday. It was pretty slow giving us our choice of seating. The front of the house is open with open-air seating by the windows, a few low-tops and a few spots at the bar. The back of the house is really dimly lit and honestly, at first I didn't even realize there was a seating area in back. The hostess was friendly, sat us immediately and the bartender came straight away to take our drink order. She was pretty fantastic throughout the meal...thanks Laura. She made my Purple Gang cocktail and another that my girl enjoyed while we waited for the food to come out. Both were refreshing and light with great fresh fruit in each of them. Torn between the a la carte tacos and the chicken tamales, Laura recommended the latter. They came out with beans and rice, verde sauce on the side, house-made hot sauce on the side and resting in a cheesy cream sauce. I liked them but I'd try the tacos next time. The hot sauce was a little ketchup-like but had a nice heat on the back end. The tamales were nice while the beans and rice were a little bland. The hot sauce helped them along though. My girl had a chicken sandwich that was really messy to eat and she liked it but didn't love it. Food aside, the atmosphere here is kind of cool...black accents to bring out the wood flooring, and a kind of modern feel to the joint. Service was great and the manager even came by to see what I thought of the tamales since they changed them up. I'd love to try the pizza and I'll be back but I think this place is still finding it's footing. Definitely worth trying though.

Oh, it's like that Royal Oak? As if Ronin, ROMT and Bistro 82 weren't enough to hold down the block, now you let a freaking horse gallop in with succulent spirits and tantalizing tacos unlike the city has ever seen? Ok, I'll bite. And drink... This corner is now the best part of town as far as I'm concerned when it comes to dining out. Iron Horse steps in the arena with a sensationally sensual interior, cool out music and a drink menu that schools. More importantly, the food is delightful and priced surprisingly well considering the high caliber of the ingredients. My drink was called the Purple Gang and it tasted like a bottle of blueberry grape Clearly Canadian circa 1995. Refreshing yes, but I couldn't confirm if it had alcohol because it was so unbelievably delicious. I also didn't feel a buzz until I chased it with a Soft Parade. I did feel something after eating the steak tacos, however. I think it was lust. Brilliantly marinated and clever portions of small steak slices were sprinkled with cilantro and wrapped in two of the best tasting and perfectly cooked tortillas known to humanity. Your boy is a certifiable, die hard taco enthusiast and I must convey to you that these sons of bitches are other wordly. Skip the boring rice and beans for $3, order another taco instead. Our waitress was effective but had the personality of a 55 year old sage painted wall made of plaster and asbestos. The host wasn't friendly either (uhh, isnt it your JOB to be nice?) and this unprovoked arrogance still doesn't take them down a notch. We dropped in around 3 PM on a Friday afternoon and were able to immediately enjoy the place in its entirety with a few other patrons who were seemingly in heaven as well. Iron Horse is that deal. $75 bill for 4 tacos, 3 mixed drinks, a beer and a monumental salad between the two of us. Simply a must stop if you're in town.

Rob, our waiter was so handsome that I was thankful for the horrible lighting to hide my blushing cheeks. With that being said though the lighting here reminded me of the "mystery meals" where you eat in dark with only the light of a candle. We literally couldn't even see the food it was that dark! Yikes. We had the esquites with steak and the chicken tamales and split both of them. The esquites needed a little twist of lime and a pinch of salt to wake up the flavors but overall was very good! It reminded me of elote/mexican street corn but in salad form. Back of the house was kind enough to split the tamales for us and those too were great! They put some type of sauce on top that I was literally scraping off the plate- it was that good! The refried beans were standard but the mexican rice was lacking any type of creativity and so boring that I didn't even touch it again after one bite. Overall, the staff was super nice, food was good, and they don't price gouge you like most places in RO so I'd recommend trying this place out! Just don't forget your flashlight ;)

I usually dislike fusion restaurants. Like, all of them. Why? Because I like it when restaurants specialize instead of trying to combine cultures that are not meant to be combined. But, sometimes, the combination yeilds something wonderful, like this little gem here. Here's my impressions, as I usually roll. Good: -The food. SO. GOOD. I ordered the ribs, which I was iffy about because this place isn't a BBQ joint, but oh em gee if the meat didn't just melt off the bone. -Dat steak burger. Damn. -Awesome and nice wait staff. -Dat tequila rack on the wall tho (But I don't drink). Bad: -Kind of dark in front of the place at night. They could use a little more illumination inside. -Tacos are kind of weird. I wouldn't recommend it. -Some tables are uneven. This is super annoying for me, since it can cause me to spill my water. -No ice in the water is cool at first, but over time the chilled water in the bottle gets warmer and that's not cool. -I'd rather have fries with my food instead of chips. I wonder if there's a way you can substitute? Notes: This place is pretty awesome. The pros definitely outweigh the cons. This would be a 5 star, but the cons are kind of..well..con-y. but hey 4 stars is awesome. I'd totally come back!! You go girl!

What a great place! The food here is very good, the staff is very well informed, and the atmosphere is extremely comfortable. I had the Buffalo shrimp blue corn taco by suggestion of a fantastic bartender, Laura. She didn't steer me wrong, it was a wonderful dinner. She filled me in on all of the ins and outs of the restaurant as well as explained brunch, which sounds amazing. I will be going back to try that out. And I won't forget to have one of the house special Bloody Marys made with pickled infused vodka, or a strawberry infused tequila margarita both sound delicious

Just had a wet steak burrito, which was fantastic in taste and quantity. You pay a little more than a normal taco shop, but it is well worth it. The server was very nice and also met the owner who obviously has high attention to detail and knows how to run a restaurant. Laid back and hip ambiance. I could imagine it would be a great place for a first date. Will come back again, thanks Tony!
